Grade 4 Writes Duets

“What is F Pentatonic? …Compose a melody using F, G, A, C, and D.”

After composing four measure melodies, students in Grade 4 put two melodies together. They analyzed the music for any notes that may clash when played simultaneously. They then edited the two melodies to create better harmonies.

Next, I played a melody for the students and asked them to improvise a melody to go along with my own. “Nothing is wrong except E and B!” We had quite a few risk takers willing to give it a go!

Finally, students were given the following staff and asked to fill in the remainder of each measure using the notes from F Pentatonic, and quarter note and eighth note rhythms:

Grade 4 is now learning to play duets together that they wrote themselves!

4H Performs “Go ‘Round the Mountain”

During our last unit, “How We Express Ourselves”, Grade 4 students were exploring folk songs from around the world. They sang, they danced, and they played folk songs on their recorders.

“Go ‘Round the Mountain” is one of the songs that we learned before students were given the option to create their own folk songs. The girls in 4H created an introduction and this dance to go along with the music. Enjoy!

“Before Dinner”

“Before Dinner” is a folk song from Congo. Many folk songs have a similar “call and response” form. Practice this song at home. We will use it for an upcoming assessment in class.

Questions to guide you:

What’s the rhythm (how long do I play this note)? Am I keeping a steady beat?

What is the name of the note? What’s the fingering on the recorder?

Am I using my tongue? Is my left hand on top?

Are my fingers flat? Am I using slow, warm air? Am I squeak-free?

Welcome to Recorder Land!

What’s happening in Grade 4 Music? RECORDERS are happening!

Our current unit of inquiry is:

“Music is an art form that can be understood and appreciated.”

How do we read and write music in traditional and non-traditional notation?

Students can use this site to review songs and materials that we used in class. Enjoy!
